Trying to wake ourselves up while unloading the van.

The week could not have started off with a better day! The sun was shining and the temperature was pleasantly mild. The day started at 5:30 when most of us woke up to go for some “Duke-aerobics” with coach Hailey Duke, consisting of a small jog around the town and some dynamic stretches to get our sleepy bodies moving.

Our view to Jefferson.

By 6:30 the vans were rolling out. The sight of the snow-covered mountain glowing in the early morning sun was enough to wake us up fully and encourage us to explore the Palmer Glacier. To get our legs under us, we started with a few free runs on the Magic Mile trails and then split up into four different groups led by the four different coaches: Erika Holmberg, Jess Kelley, Keely Kelleher and Hailey Duke.

Slacking off after Duke Taekwondo.

Four other girls (Mackenzie from CO, Shelby from MA, Maddy from IL, and Reagan from MI)  and I got the pleasure of skiing with Hailey Duke for the day where we went back to the basics to get ourselves comfortable again on skis. We also spent a good chunk of time doing J-turns where you straight line it down the hill for a few seconds and then arc a huge turn in one direction so you end up facing back up the hill.

After ripping turns all morning, we returned to Government Camp for a delicious lunch of grilled cheese and soup cooked by Keely’s mom Jennifer. Afternoon activities then followed including ski demoing, watching world cup soccer, playing on the slack line, and learning Taekwondo from coach Hailey.

Camp is in full swing here as we are all getting to know names and personalities! Such a blast to be hanging out with fit, fast, and fun girls, not to mention the very inspirational coaches! More sun and good weather expected for the rest of the week!

Beautiful morning lift ride.

So excited about our first run of the week!
